Under the advocacy and guidance of the World Health Organization (WHO), most countries in the world started to adopt the new model of school health -”health promoting school” (HPS) in early 1990s to implement a variety of school health programs for the sake of promoting the students, teachers and staffs, parents, and community residents' health. In 2003, Taiwan began to apply HPS model to implement school health programs. No matter most schools tried very hard to upgrade the effectiveness of school health, there are still some concepts and strategies which need to be clarified and reinforced. In this paper, the following domains are described and discussed: definitions of HPS, the rationales and features of HPS, recommendations for implementing HPS programs suggested by WHO, brief history of HPS, strategies used to conduct HPS programs, and the major components of HPS. At last, ten recommendations are drawn and described in order to improve the effectiveness and performance of school health for all schools. |
