The National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) with pseudo-identification numbers of subjects was released by the Bureau of NHI, Taiwan, for academic research. This article focused on 32 cancer-related English articles published between 1996 and 2009. The research topics from the selected articles included the issues about cancers such as: the diseases increasing the risk of cancer, included diabetes mellitus, traumatic brain injury, Bell's palsy, female patients with schizophrenia, male patients with bipolar disorder, severe depression, non-apnea sleep disorder, chronic urticaria, female patients with allergic rhinitis or asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, dermatomyositis, polymyositis, herpes zoster ophthalmicus, end stage of renal disease chronic dialysis and after renal transplantation, otitis media in adult, gout, erectile dysfunction, and pulmonary tuberculosis. These findings suggest that patients with chronic diseases have higher risks of cancers and may need more cancer screenings and counseling in addition to periodical health examinations. |
