Globalization brings about business work team diversity. Some studies linked diversity to favorable performance whereas others showed that team diversity diminishes team performance. To fully capture the complex relationship between team diversity and performance, we examined the intervening role of conflict between team diversity and performance and if trust moderates the relationship between team conflict and performance. The model was tested with a sample of 60 teams. Results included: (1) team diversity has a significant positive associations with task conflict and relationship conflict. Specifically, positional diversity has more impact on task conflict, and education diversity has on relationship conflict. (2) Team conflict is a mediating factor between team diversity and performance. Task and relationship conflict are both detrimental to team performance. (3) Trust is a moderator between relationship conflict and performance. The association between relationship conflict and performance becomes weaker in groups with high trust. |
