The prevalence of obesity is rapidly becoming endemic problem and continues to increase in worldwide. Obesity is proposed as risk factor of developing metabolic syndrome. The gut microbiota has emerged as an important factor in the development of obesity and metabolic syndrome. Recent studies have shown that alteration of the gut microbiota is associated with an obese phenotype. The protective effect against diabetes of gut microbiota modulation with prebiotic, probiotics or antibiotics has been confirmed in recent observations. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is an excellent alternative and complementary medicine for management of obesity and metabolic syndrome. In this review, we describe the relationship between the gut microbiota and obesity, and the mechanisms by which the gut microbiota influence inflammation in obesity. We then described the potential role of TCM in mediating the effects of the gut microbiota in the development of obesity. |
