Professor Naoyoshi Ogawa 小川尚義 was the founding father of Formosan linguistics. He started to work on Formosan languages in early twentieth century, nearly a hundred years ago when some plain tribe languages were still actively spoken or remembered by a few older speakers. Although he published many important papers and a monumental monograph(co-authored with Professor Erin Asai 淺井惠倫 in 1935)during his lifetime, many of his language materials and manuscripts remained unpublished when he died in 1947. |
