Since 2007, Ganjeon village, located on the southern coast of Jeju island, has been designated as the site for a US naval base by the Korean government. Villagers, however, are greatly unhappy with the project and have staged rallies to stop construction. This article describes the anti-naval base movement in Jeju and analyzes how it has gradually approached the universal values of the peace movement. Meanwhile, due to the US strategy of rebalancing towards Asia, Taiwan, Okinawa and Jeju have been forced to militarize. This article suggests that these three islands should launch a peace campaign to build a demilitarized Triangle to reduce military threats caused by the strategy of rebalancing towards Asia. |
