The assessment of faculty (or evaluation of teachers) has been an important work for the universities in Taiwan in recent years. According to the revised University Act of 2005, all universities have to establish their own systems of faculty assessment, and put them into practice. Based on the survey conducted in 2011, it is found that all of the universities in Taiwan have set up their own systems of faculty assessment. But because the Ministry of Education has no clear or unified rules about the implementation of the faculty assessment, each university, based on the principles of academic autonomy and the approval of the University Council, has the right to establish its own rules of the game related. It is also found that, in addition to the items of assessment are common to all universities, bound to the assessments of teaching, research, guidance and services, in accordance with the regulations of the University Act, the target groups of assessment, the criteria used for assessment, the cases of exemption, the frequency of assessment, and the university's responsive actions or treatments to the results of faculty assessment, etc. are quite different and diversified among universities in Taiwan. |
