The purpose of this study was to develop a standardized test to assess the abilitiesto respond to wh-questions for preschool children. Three hundred and seventy-one chil-drenaged3to5participatedinthestudy.Themainresultsofthestudyarelistedasfol-lows. First, Test of Wh-Question Response (TWQR) was characterized with excellentinternal consistency, retest reliability, inter-rater reliability, and intra-rater reliability.Second, the participants’ scores on TWQR correlated well with scores on Word Ex-pression Subtest (Tseng, 1996) of the General Test Battery of Children’s CognitiveAbilities (Wu et al., 1997). Third, the scores on TWQR increased with age as expected.Fourth, there was a significant interaction effect between kinds of questions and pre-sence of referent pictures. Finally, children with language delays performed less wellthan typically developing children on TWQR. In addition, we offered cutoff points forscreening out children with language delays for three age groups. |
