To monitor the change of stroke survivors, the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) has become an important outcome measure. The disease-specific HRQoL measures such as the Stroke Impact Scale (SIS) can be used to reflect the impact of disease features on the patients' subjective perspectives. Nevertheless, the stroke survivors are commonly restricted by the communication or cognitive dysfunction and consequently have difficulties to complete the ratings of HRQoL measures. Proxy assessment was considered as a potential surrogate corresponding to self-report of patients' HRQoL levels. This study was to investigate the consistency between the proxy assessments and self-reports. Totally 19 stroke of the stroke-specific HRQoL patient-caregiver dyads completed the stroke impact scale (SIS). The ICC values computed for the SIS scores rated by patients and caregivers were fair to high level. These findings suggested the proxy assessments can be a good choice for clinical practitioners and researchers to detect the patients' subjective concerns and needs due to disease impact of stroke. |
